[Movie] RoboCop

A very nostalgic movie depending on which generation you belong, this new RoboCop movie is the reboot of the RoboCop franchise from the 1987 film. The were already 3 movie of RoboCop which makes the first trilogy. RoboCop (1987), RoboCop 2 (1990), and RoboCop 3 (1993). This new film doesn't continue from the last RoboCop 3, but started on a different setting of story. There a lot differences from the last trilogy, but don't worry, this RoboCop will not be a letdown to either the old fans or the new audiences.

The film stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson. Because of the generic storyline of the RoboCop film, there isn't much that I can write. Its about man and machine becomes one, where the questions raised about the feasibility and morality of using machines to exact justice to the criminals. Something like that. In overall, the film is all about family fun entertainment. There is nothing more than entertaining especially for kids to watch some robot fighting the unjust.

Make it looks sleeker and more intimidating... Make it black!
Now, one of the obvious changes made to the RoboCop is its very own appearance. The movie takes place in 2028 where a huge corporation are supplying military hardware to U.S peacekeeping forces. By military hardware, I meant robots that takes place of the U.S human personnel, to reduce human casualties in the war against terror.

The corporation, Omnicorp, however wanted more than just replacing U.S human troop abroad. They wanted to use their machines as law enforcers back in the U.S soils as well. The problem is that, the public opinion deemed that it is immoral to let the robots to pull the trigger even if its in the name of justice. The reason is actually quite obvious, the robots were made by Omnicorp, hence would give the corporation unprecedented power to control the U.S judicial system.

The Omnicorp CEO, Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton), is pushing to make an appeal on the Dreyfus Act, that is blocking the usage of combat robot in the U.S soils. Supporting his cause, is Patrick 'Pat' Novak (Samuel L.Jackson), the host for The Novak Element TV show. In his desperation to find a loophole in the Dreyfus Act, Raymond asked his marketing team to work in conjunction with scientist Dr. Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) to create a prototype that would combine the combat robot with human element.

This is where police detective Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) comes into play. The detective is a 2-goody shoes cop in Detroit Police Department, where everyone who is corrupt hates him. He got himself blew up in an attempt on his life and his family, and scientist took this opportunity to remade him back. Into a half man half machine.

I remember my wife.. wait, how do I...
And that is how RoboCop comes into being. Differently from the original film series, Alex didn't get his memory wiped out. He still remembers about himself, in fact, he was surprised of what have become of him. Dr. Dennett assures him that he is still who was, which lead to a bit of complication.

With his newfound machine ability, he was able to solves cases in much shorter time span. Also, he is impervious to small arm fire, which saves him from being stabbed in the ass by the small time criminals. All looking well and good, except the good doctor doesn't take consideration of how Alex got himself screwed up like that in the first place. So Alex took it to his own initiative to solve his own murder case, which to his horror unravel a pretty fucked up connections between the criminals and his own Police Department. He found out about the dirty cops, executes them, and almost killed his own Chief Police Officer.

Omnicorp manages to shut him down in time, and Raymond started to have a second thought about having a human element in his new law enforcement robot prototypes. Even Rick Mattox (Jackie Earle Haley), his own military tactician expert warns him that "this is the guy that solves his own murder case", which means if he unravel a high profile case that involve politician, and more over Omnicorp own's dirty little secret, it would be end of everything.

Raymond ordered the complete shutdown on the RoboCop, but Alex retaliates with the help of Dr. Dennett, and chase over Raymond. Just as we all feared, Omnicorp indeed have power over their robots, which protected Raymond from being harmed by RoboCop. But Alex manages to override the coding, and killed all the bad guy.

Well, that do you expect? Its good cop, and RoboCop. Of course RoboCop won. But with Omnicorp crumbling down with the testimony made by Dr Dennett against Omnicorp, RoboCop would soon be scrap anyway. Except, he didn't get scrap. The Omnicorp's parent company, OCP, decides to review the RoboCop program, and Alex's body is rebuilt back in Dr. Dennett's laboratory. RoboCop is back!
